A Custom Floating Mantel in Real Wood

A floating mantel is a solid-looking wood shelf with nothing holding it up that you can see. Chava Grain & Beam by Chava Home Design builds each one as a real wood box beam in its Indian Trail shop, with the support hidden inside, and mount it on brick, stone or drywall fireplace walls across the Charlotte area.

Clean, warm and sized to your fireplace, in the same wood as your beams if you like.

What Is a Floating Mantel?

A floating mantel is a mantel shelf supported from inside, so it appears to float on the fireplace wall, and ours is built as a real wood box beam.

Most mantels you buy online are a solid board on brackets or a hollow box on a metal rod. Ours are built in our shop the same way we build box beam construction for ceilings: real boards joined with clean corners, with the support fitted inside. It is one of the custom fireplace mantels we build.

How the Hidden Support Works

A support is fastened to the wall or masonry, and the mantel slides over it, so nothing shows. A French cleat, two interlocking angled strips, is one well-known version of the idea. We choose the support for your wall type and confirm it at the visit.

Where Floating Mantels Work Best

Painted or natural brick, stacked stone, and drywall fireplace walls with a tile or stone surround. The mantel adds one warm line of wood without covering the material around it.

Floating Mantels on Gas and Electric Fireplaces

Gas inserts and electric units follow their manufacturer's installation instructions for how close wood can sit. We read those for your model before we set height and depth.

When a Floating Mantel Is the Right Choice

Pick a floating mantel when the fireplace wall already looks good and needs one clean accent, not a full frame.

  • The Brick or Stone Is the Star

A floating shelf adds warmth without hiding the masonry you like.

  • You Want a Modern, Clean Look

No corbels, brackets or legs: one straight line of real wood.

  • A TV Hangs Above the Fireplace

A slim mantel can sit between the opening and the TV without crowding either.

  • Your Ceiling Has Wood Beams

A mantel built the same way ties the fireplace to the ceiling.

  • The Builder Left a Bare Fireplace

Many new homes have no mantel at all; a floating mantel finishes the wall.

  • You Want It Up Before the Holidays

About two weeks from production to installation.

How Height Limits the Depth of a Floating Mantel

On a masonry fireplace, the closer a wood mantel sits to the opening, the less it may stick out from the wall, so height and depth have to be planned together.

The International Residential Code keeps wood at least 6 inches from a masonry fireplace opening and, within 12 inches of the opening, limits how far it projects to 1/8 inch for each inch of distance (Fine Homebuilding). Above 12 inches, that projection limit no longer applies.

Maximum projection of combustible trim by distance from a masonry fireplace opening under the IRC rule
Distance above the openingMaximum projectionWhat fits
Less than 6 inchesNo wood allowedNoncombustible material only
6 inches3/4 inchFlat trim only
8 inches1 inchFlat trim only
10 inches1 1/4 inchesFlat trim only
12 inches or moreOutside the 12-inch zoneA full-depth floating mantel

This applies to masonry fireplaces. Gas inserts, electric units and factory-built fireplaces follow their manufacturer's instructions, which can require more distance. Local inspectors have the final word.

Mounting by Fireplace Wall

Brick

  • Solid brick versus brick veneer
  • Mortar joints in good condition
  • Painted or natural face

Stone

  • Thickness of the stone or veneer
  • How flat the face is
  • Gaps to scribe the mantel to

Drywall or Tile

  • Framing location behind the wall
  • Tile or stone surround thickness
  • Outlets or wiring above

For the full rules with examples, read code clearance for mantels, and compare styles in floating vs corbel mantels.

Floating Mantel Questions, Answered

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most about floating mantels.

What is a floating mantel?

A floating mantel is a wood mantel shelf with no visible brackets or corbels. The support is hidden inside the mantel and fastened to the wall, so the shelf seems to float above the fireplace.

How is your floating mantel built?

We build it like our ceiling beams: a real wood box beam, three or more visible sides joined in our shop, with the support fitted inside before it reaches your home.

Can a floating mantel go on brick or stone?

Yes. We mount floating mantels on brick, stone and drywall fireplace walls. We check the wall at the free visit and explain the mounting for your fireplace.

Will a floating mantel hold my decor?

Yes, when it is mounted into your wall or masonry with hidden support sized for it. We explain the mounting and what it can hold at the visit.

Is a wood mantel safe above my fireplace?

Yes, when height and depth respect the clearance rules for your fireplace type. We plan both around those rules before we build. See our guide to code clearance for mantels.

How deep should a floating mantel be?

Deep enough to hold what you want to display, and no deeper than the clearance rules allow at its height above the opening. The table on this page shows how depth and height work together.

Floating mantel or corbel mantel: which is better?

Floating mantels look cleaner and more modern; corbel mantels look more traditional. Compare them in our guide to floating vs corbel mantels.

Can my floating mantel match my ceiling beams?

Yes. Since we build both as box beams, a floating mantel can share the exact wood, size proportions and stain of your ceiling beams.

How long does a floating mantel take?

About two weeks from material production to installation.

A floating mantel pairs naturally with matching shelves, ceiling beams in the same wood, or a full surround for a plainer fireplace.
