Wood Box Beams
Clean edges and an even stain for modern and classic rooms.
Compare smooth-finish box beamsRustic ceiling beams are real wood beams with the knots, saw marks and texture that smooth lumber hides. We build them from rough-sawn and character-grade lumber in our Indian Trail shop, so the texture is real, then finish and install them across the Charlotte area.
Texture you can see and feel, chosen in your home before a single board is cut.

We bring rough-sawn and character-grade samples to your visit.
A beam reads as rustic when its surface shows how the wood grew and how it was cut: knots, checks in the grain, color changes and saw texture.
Smooth beams hide those marks; rustic beams keep them. We build both kinds the same way, as three-sided box beams in real lumber, so the difference is the board we choose and how we finish it. See all of our ceiling beam work for the other styles.
Rough-sawn boards keep the marks of the saw. You can see the parallel or circular lines across the face and feel them by hand. It is the most textured option and reads best from a distance, on tall ceilings.
Character grade is smooth to the touch but keeps the natural features that clear grades remove: knots, mineral streaks, color shifts and wilder grain. It looks rustic up close without the heavy texture.
A clear or light finish shows the raw wood; a medium or dark stain deepens the texture and hides the color differences between boards. We test both on the texture you choose before production.
Choose rustic beams when you want the ceiling to feel aged, warm and hand-built, not new and uniform.
Rough-sawn beams belong with shiplap, stone fireplaces and wide-plank floors.
One textured element overhead warms up white walls and clean lines.
Rustic beams and a rough stone chimney share the same natural texture.
Texture reads from 20 feet below, where smooth beams can look flat.
Knots and saw marks make a new house feel like it has a history.
Character-grade and rough-sawn lumber give the look with new, sound wood.
The same five steps as all our beams, with one extra decision at the visit: which texture and grade you want to live with.
We measure the room, the height and any slope, and check the framing.

Rustic beams follow the same six price factors as all our beams; the grade and texture you choose sit inside the species and finish factors.
| Factor | How it applies to rustic beams | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wood species | Each species has its own price, in any grade | Character-grade white oak versus rough-sawn pine |
| Beam size | Larger beams use more lumber | Beams sized for a tall vault versus a flat 10-foot ceiling |
| Number and length | More beams and longer runs mean more material and labor | A full grid versus three beams across the room |
| Ceiling height and shape | Tall and sloped ceilings take more setup and cutting | A vaulted great room versus a flat den |
| Finish | Stain testing on texture and board selection add shop time | A dark stain matched to a stone fireplace |
| Distance | Travel time to your home | Near Indian Trail versus farther out in our 100-mile area |
We don't publish prices; you get a written quote after a free visit. Want to see rustic beam textures in your home first? Book a visit and we bring the samples.
The three finishes differ in texture, how they take stain and how they age, and the right one depends on how close you will see the beams and what else is in the room.
| What matters | Rough-sawn | Character-grade | Smooth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Saw marks you can feel | Smooth, with knots and streaks | Smooth and uniform |
| Look from the floor | Strong texture, reads from far away | Natural variation, subtle texture | Clean lines, even color |
| How stain reads | Darker and less even | Even, with knots taking stain differently | Most even and predictable |
| Best styles | Farmhouse, mountain, lodge | Transitional, rustic modern | Modern, classic, coastal |
| Best ceilings | Tall and vaulted | Any height | Any height |
| Care | Holds more dust; brush to clean | Wipe or dust | Wipe or dust |
Rustic beams look intentional when the rest of the room has some calm. Pair them with smooth walls or a clean mantel, not texture everywhere.
Rustic beams that are too small look like trim. Texture needs mass to read as timber.
Texture should come from the wood, not from blotchy stain. Test the stain on the real texture first.

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us about rough-sawn and character-grade beams.
Rustic ceiling beams are real wood beams built from rough-sawn or character-grade lumber, so they show knots, saw marks and natural variation instead of a smooth, uniform face.
Rough-sawn lumber keeps the texture left by the saw, so you can feel it. Character-grade lumber is smooth but keeps natural knots, color streaks and grain changes. Both read as rustic; rough-sawn is the more textured of the two.
Not when they are built and finished well. Character-grade lumber shows real knots and saw marks that foam can only imitate, and a sealed, even finish makes it read as authentic, not rough.
Pine and red oak in character grade or rough-sawn are the classic rustic choices. Our guide on which wood looks most rustic compares all six species we use.
Yes. A textured surface absorbs more stain than a smooth one, so the same stain usually looks darker and less even on rough-sawn lumber. That is why we test stain on the actual texture you choose.
No. They suit farmhouse and mountain styles, but also transitional homes where one textured element warms up a clean, modern room.
Yes. We measure the slope on site and cut rustic beams to the angle, the same way we build all our vaulted ceiling beams.
Dust them with a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment. Textured surfaces hold more dust than smooth ones, which is worth knowing for beams in a kitchen.
About two weeks from material production to installation, with most of the work in our Indian Trail shop.
Rustic beams pair with smooth beams elsewhere in the house, with vaulted layouts, and with a mantel in the same texture.
